<div class="separator" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh4rKAgahwuoxcML81IaFDsv8hunD-TZe6gN7tM6C2nd4mv8Q57PE-v9iBqpMaJEuGi1x7q4GFgrSZdeXyn9NgUF2bDLysr7EPVHKoCRMgyyB88Z9EJJdAA5LEufWoAnhas7zvTVJPJXI/s320/121205022726-microsoft-socl-story-top.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>(CNN)</strong> -- After a long period of closed beta testing, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1997060459695269006" target="_blank">Microsoft </a>made the beta version of its social network, Socl, available to everyone on Tuesday.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph2" style="text-align: justify;">
Socl initially <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1997060459695269006" target="_blank">launched this May</a>. It's a search-meets-social networking website that looks more like <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1997060459695269006" target="_blank">Pinterest </a>than <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1997060459695269006" target="_blank">Facebook</a>, and has until now been open only to invited Microsoft employees and college students.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph2" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph2" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">Microsoft has opened Socl, a search-meets-social website, to the public for beta testing. </span></div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph2" style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph3" style="text-align: justify;">
Now, everyone with a
Microsoft or Facebook account can access it. The sign-up process is
effortless -- users simply connect their account with Socl. They can
then start sharing content (e.g. photos, videos, links), and comment on
other members' posts.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph4" style="text-align: justify;">
Socl's forever-scrolling
front page, which shows posts from all users, can feel a bit random.
Also, though the site offers categorization by tags, it's not that easy
to find the content you want.</div>
<div class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph5" style="text-align: justify;">
Overall, Socl is a solid
time-waster at this point. As more people join, the site should become
more usable, but the question is: With all the social networks and
content-sharing sites around, will Socl ever reach critical mass?</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihdJLIp71-gcmcsgHYJbI-Hs4XsmZ4ILSP99BQ0APCGHkISObRnAcFZKIEu63BKYoDgSQ_Yz8RP4sIY6_JeycpEUVo0TZ6K3HbRJzc_Qo-fwjhdlgnSvV0vQvHAte4DpoRHFTYOPzbLG0/s1600/pontifex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihdJLIp71-gcmcsgHYJbI-Hs4XsmZ4ILSP99BQ0APCGHkISObRnAcFZKIEu63BKYoDgSQ_Yz8RP4sIY6_JeycpEUVo0TZ6K3HbRJzc_Qo-fwjhdlgnSvV0vQvHAte4DpoRHFTYOPzbLG0/s320/pontifex.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here are millions and millions of folks out there who already own a
Twitter account, with some stalkers having more than just one. Well,
one of the world’s most revered spiritual leaders, the Pope, has finally
jumped aboard the Twitter bandwagon officially, where he is now able to
send Twitter messages to the Catholic faithful via the handle
@pontifex, which is actually his personal account, at least according to
the Vatican. According to a spokesman, Pope Benedict XVI intended to
“reach out to everyone” with tweets – and in order to achieve the
maximum exposure, whatever the man of God tweets will be translated into
eight languages.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span id="more-76915"></span>It is said that if you want to know just
what the Pope’s first tweet is all about from the @pontifex account,
then wait for December 12th to know more. @pontifex means “pontiff” as
well as “builder of bridges”, and both of them are very apt for a man of
the Pope’s stature. Of course, this December 12th would not be the
first tweet from the Pope, as he already sent his first tweet in 2011
(albeit using a Vatican account) in order to roll out the Holy See’s
news information portal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican, said, “We are going
to get a spiritual message. The Pope is not going to be walking around
with a Blackberry or an iPad and no-one is going to be putting words
into the Pope’s mouth. He will tweet what he wants to tweet.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the Vatican, the Pope will rely on a question-and-answer
format for his first Twitter session, where he will focus mainly on
answering questions concerning the faith, limited by just 140 characters
tops for each reply.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In fact, the Vatican has already begun to invite folks to start
sending in questions ahead of time so that the Pope will have enough
time to formulate his answer when the time comes. Will the Pope overtake
Justin Bieber in terms of Twitter followers eventually?</div>

NEW YORK—Microsoft is dropping its instant-messaging program and forcing most users to switch to Skype.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Maintaining Windows Live Messenger made less sense after
Microsoft Corp. bought Skype for $8.5 billion last year. A new version
of Skype released a few weeks ago allows users to sign in with a
Microsoft account. By merging the two services, people won’t have to
maintain two separate contact lists.

Microsoft says that Messenger users who switch to Skype will get
benefits such as the ability to call landline and mobile phones and

Except for mainland China, Messenger will be discontinued worldwide after the first quarter of 2013. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
MANILA, Philippines—When Finnish electronics giant launched its Lumia
line of smartphones, it signaled to the industry that the former world
leader in mobile was not yet out of the game now dominated by Asian
brands.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Lumia line was the result of a partnership with software
giant Microsoft, which itself was playing catchup in the mobile arena
now ruled by Silicon Valley’s Apple Inc. and Google.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A the top of the new Nokia smartphone line is the Lumia 900,
which remains, at least for the</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">IN A sea of iPhones and Samsungs, Nokia’s device appears to hold its own. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Philippine market, the best Nokia phone
money can buy. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Inquirer was fortunate enough to get its hands on the Lumia
900 (care of Nokia Philippines) and, over the span of two weeks, the
much-anticipated device did not disappoint.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The jury may still be out on whether Windows 8—Microsoft’s latest
software for tablets and PC hybrids—is a success. But there should be
no doubt that Windows phone 7 and the subsequent Windows phone 8
operating systems for mobile phones have the potential to become one of
the major platforms for devices.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Windows for phones is easier to use than Google’s widget-heavy
Android operating system, or even the heavily favored Apple iOS for
iPhones, iPads and iPods.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead of endless pages for apps, Windows gives users just two
screens: a start screen filled with customizable tiles for easy access
of preferred apps, and a second screen that’s a simple list of all apps
on the phone.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This should appeal to those in the market for new devices, especially users upgrading from “dumb phones.”
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nokia complements the simple yet feature-packed software with elegant hardware.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Lumia reviewed for this story had a one-piece body that
curves in the front to transition smoothly with the 4.3-inch AMOLED
display. This gives the device the elegance most Android phones lack,
despite the Lumia 900’s slightly thicker profile than most high-end
devices in the market.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Unfortunately, Nokia decided to give the Lumia 900 a flat
display, instead of the slightly concave glass seen on its smaller
brother, the Lumia 800, and the newer Lumia 920.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Two chrome volume rockers can be found on the right side of the
phone. Right below those is the lock/unlock button and, near the bottom,
is a dedicated camera button that opens the camera app with one press.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On top of the phone are an earphone jack and a door that hides the slot for a micro-SIM.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Under the hood, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon
chipset and Adreno graphics unit, both delivering snappy performance and
great images.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The phone’s 8-megapixel camera performs well in well-lit
conditions thanks to Carl Zeiss lenses, but can be inconsistent under
artificial light—nothing that a quick computer tweak can’t fix but still
a minor annoyance.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Overall, the Lumia 900 loses some, but wins on most. Windows
phone 7 and the recently launched Windows phone 8 are both top-notch
operating systems and the Nokia hardware shows that off really well.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It’s good to see Nokia getting its groove back, and anyone buying
the Lumia 900, or the upcoming Lumia 920 (which we think is worth the
wait), will stand out in a smart phone sea of iPhones and Samsungs.<br />

This mouse will not just serve as a scroll and click functionality, it is
still able to scan various documents. More precisely, of course, the
documents are not in full, and in part because the size of the mouse
does not allow this. So if you want to scan a couple of pages, rather
than a whole stack of documents, then this mouse is just what we need.
As well as the OCR technology to convert scanned text will allow for
editorial purposes. <br />
Mouse scanner, of course, not completely replace a large scanner, but will in any case not more than gadget. The mouse is able to scan at a high resolution of 320 dpi.<br />

Nikon taps Google for a seriously smart camera<br />
<br />
The concept of shoehorning WiFi and phone-like features isn't new,
but Nikon is clearly taking the concept seriously, pushing a full
version of Google's Android Gingerbread operating system into the
Coolpix S800c. It's certainly not the first connected camera, but it is a
bit refreshing in a time when buggy, proprietary connectivity systems
are the norm.<br />
<div class="p1">
From the back, the camera is a lot like a phone. It uses a
big 3.5-inch touchscreen OLED display that can be used to watch video,
surf the web, and pretty much anything else you can do on a typical
Android device. It prefers to be connected via the integrated WiFi, but
if there's no open network around, it can send images and videos
wirelessly to a compatible tablet or smartphone so they can be uploaded
using the data network. It's a bit like the WU-1a wifi adapter that was announced in concert with the D3200 DSLR. It even has built-in GPS like a smartphone.</div>

<div class="p1">
Despite all the likenesses between it and a smartphone,
the S800c is still very much a dedicated camera. It has a 16-megapixel
backside illumination CMOS sensor (which is much bigger than the typical
cell phone camera) planted behind a 10x Vibration Reduction-equipped
Nikkor zoom lens with a full-frame equivalent focal range of 25-250mm.
It also does 1080p video, which it can spit directly onto YouTube and
Vimeo for embarrassing your buddies with maximum efficiency.</div>
<div class="p1">
It's a very cool concept, especially since it now turns
the camera into a secondary media player and web-surfing machine. It
will be available in both white and black starting in September, at
which point it will cost $349, which actually makes it $50 cheaper than
the 64 GB iPod Touch. It seems like it's not too far-fetched that the
next step be for them just cram a SIM card in there and make the thing a
full-fledged smartphone. Though, with their strong mobile hand, maybe
Samsung will beat them to it.</div>

What do you think? Does your camera need apps? Are we ready for a camera with access to Instagram?</div>

Faster performance, video editing, and a new look are some of the upgraded features from CS5<br />
<br />
Lightroom 4
has been available for a couple weeks now, so Adobe has decided it's
time to give Photoshop CS6 the public beta treatment. The final release
is slated for some time in the first half of this year, but if you're
willing to help Adobe test out a near-final version, you can mess around
with it now for free. At least for a while.<br />
<div class="p1">
The jump to CS6 isn't a granular one. In fact, upon
opening the program, you'll notice that it has gotten a very new look.
The UI has been darkened a bit in order to give you a more neutral
workspace against which you can view your images. Of course, you can
always switch if the new look isn't for you, which is something Adobe
seems to pride themselves on at almost every level, and rightfully so.
With so many dedicated users having used their software for years,
there's always bound to be push back to change.</div>
<div class="p1">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="p1">
Some of the biggest improvements come in the arena of
performance. I've been playing with the pre-release version for a few
weeks now and there are some actions that happen noticeably faster. The
liquify tool, for instance, has been substantially revamped so now your
image loads almost immediately in the liquify interface. It often won't
load in tiles like you're probably used to in previous version.
Retouchers will likely be happy about that. This is all a product of
some behind the scenes tweaking, which makes much better use of graphics
processors. It's worth noting, though, that some older machines
(especially those running Windows XP) won't be able to take advantage of
the faster performance.</div>
<div class="p1">
There's still a clear focus on the Content-Aware
technologies, adding the oft-requested Content-Aware Patch tool into the
mix. As you may have seen in the "sneak peak" videos released in the
past few weeks, it basically allows you to move entire objects around
inside an image with striking simplicity. </div>
<div class="p1">
Another big step forward is the revamping of video
handling. While the video editing capabilities still aren't quite as
robust as you'll find in motion-specific programs like Premiere, they do
maintain a very Photoshop-like experience. In playing with it, I found
the drag and drop style editing reminded me a bit of how I'd expect to
interact with a touch-based app I'd find on a tablet. Certainly seems
like a nice gateway for still photographers to start dabbling in video.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3fAYEDlKSipkY4cfahGfowoo5AvDibgPCnXm4baKpTen_ynn7Dl5GXasNnfyceMjLgFEBGhRY1heZxIllkmOQeW16Av2977p52zhXgZk7RZ2r15sfM7wVqgW84ASdPK2L-GOiqJ8VOQs/s1600/photoshop_cs6_raw_module.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3fAYEDlKSipkY4cfahGfowoo5AvDibgPCnXm4baKpTen_ynn7Dl5GXasNnfyceMjLgFEBGhRY1heZxIllkmOQeW16Av2977p52zhXgZk7RZ2r15sfM7wVqgW84ASdPK2L-GOiqJ8VOQs/s1600/photoshop_cs6_raw_module.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="p1">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
Back to the photography-specific
features, Photoshop CS6 includes the latest Adobe Camera RAW processing
module (pictured above), which makes editing RAW files more like the
experience you'll get in Lightroom 4. </div>
<div class="p1">
Adobe has also made a pretty big step forward in the arena
of automatic image correction. I know, it's a badge of dishonor in many
circles to even think about hitting that "auto" button, but they have
realized that it can be a good starting point and they have capitalized
on that. Letting Photoshop do a little bit of the editing for you now
isn't as scary as it once was, especially if you're just doing quick
edits.</div>
<div class="p1">
The Adaptive Wide Angle correction is a nice addition for
people who regularly shoot ultra-wide photos, especially if you're using
a lens that doesn't have a reliable lens profile for correcting
distortion. Of course, it can't fully fight off your wacky edges, but it
can make your subject look less distorted and that's an improvement
most of the time.</div>
<div class="p1">
The new lens blur features are also nice additions. The
Iris Blur utility lets you mimic shallower depth of field by assigning
different points in an image different blur values. It's not going to
turn your camera into a Lytro Light Field Camera,
but it can be effective if used responsibly. The tilt-shift simulation
is also pretty good if you're willing to do some tweaking. Still, it's a
bit quicker than the old way of faking it, and the effect renders
immediately.</div>
<div class="p1">
So far, I've found the Beta to be very solid, but with any
beta, you're better off not using it for work that's absolutely
crucial. You never know when a bug is going to hit. But, if you have the
hard drive space and your computer can handle the performance

The goofy Samsung Galaxy Camera--a point-and-shoot with a 4.8-inch
touchscreen and a full version of Android--came out of nowhere and
actually impressed us. The interface is fast and efficient for changing
settings, the screen is great, and the camera has some pretty decent
optics to book (21x optical zoom lens, 16MP CMOS sensor). And we just
got an email from AT&T telling us the camera will cost $499.99,
either with or without a 4G data plan. Yoooouch. That's even more than
the $450 Canon S110, the reigning champ of advanced compacts. We'll<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Canon's new DSLR has been tweaked to help it capture all the beautiful stuff out there in space</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Like the EOS 20Da that came before it, Canon's EOS 60Da shares many of its features with <a href="http://www.popphoto.com/gear/2011/01/lab-test-canon-60d">its non-astronomical sibling</a>. They have made a few tweaks, however, to facilitate <a href="http://www.popphoto.com/how-to/2008/12/how-to-astrophotography-101">taking photos of the heavens</a>.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
The 60Da has a modified infrared filter as well as a
sensor that has been adjusted to reduce noise over long exposures while
increasing its sensitivity to hydrogen alpha (sometimes known as
H-alpha). There's plenty of H-alpha floating around in space even though
our eyes -- and most traditional digital camera sensors can't see it.
It usually plays a pretty pivotal role in those awesome images of the
sun we've been seeing lately that depict the wild solar storms and
flares. The 60Da's APS-C sensor is roughly three times more sensitive to
H-alpha with some help from the modified infrared filter. The final
result is a 20-percent increase in transmittance of the hydrogen alpha
line.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Since H-alpha is a biproduct of hydrogen atoms (this
specific kind occurs when a hydrogen electron drops an energy level) it
tends to have the most dramatic visual effect in nebulas rich in that
element. The visual spectrum line that's created has a wavelength of <span style="font-family: sans-serif; line-height: 19px;">656.28nm, which falls into the realm of reds, which is part of the reason you see so many striking space images in that shade.</span></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
The Vari-angle LCD is another key feature for
astrophotographers. It has a resolution of 1,040,000 dots and allows for
easy composition when the body is attached to a giant lens or even a
telescope that needs to be precisely positioned. In live view, they've
added a totally silent shutter mode (the mirror is already up in live
view, so the electronic shutter doesn't actually need to make noise) to
reduce camera jiggle on long lenses. According to the press material,
the noise reduction has also been "enhanced" for long exposure shooting.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Packaged with the 60Da is Canon's RA-E3 Remote Control
Adatper which makes it compatible with timing remotes like the TC-80N3,
which you'll have to buy on your own. It also comes with an AC adapter
kit so you can keep the camera plugged into an external power source.
Long exposures like those required for this kind of space photography
can be brutal on batteries, especially if you're out on cold nights
which are usually excellent for capturing stars. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
The EOS 60Da will only be available from select dealers
and will cost $1,499 when it starts shipping earlier this month. That's
about a $500 premium over the standard version, but that's likely a
non-issue for dedicated astrophotographers. We're excited to take it out
into a dark field and give it a try. We just hope we get our review
body before the mosquito season is in full swing.</div>

A new sensor and a wireless connection for Sony's popular ILC<br />
<br />
<div class="content">
<div class="p1">
The pre-Photokina new camera blitz continues today
with Sony's new NEX-5R interchangeable-lens compact. The name might not
sound like much of an upgrade, but there are some substantial
differences from its predecessor, the NEX-5N.</div>
<div class="p1">
The biggest new change from a photographic standpoint is
the 16.1-megapixel sensor. It maintains the APS-C size, but they have
now added 99 phase-detection AF sensors, giving it the ability to use
both phase detection and contrast AF, similar to the Nikon 1-series and the Canon EOS-M and Rebel T4i
cameras. Set to Speed Priority Continuous mode, it's capable of
maintaining AF tracking up to 10 FPS, which continues Sony's emphasis on
sheer shooting speed.</div>
<div class="p1">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="p1">
The other gorilla on the spec sheet is the addition of
WiFi and Sony's new PlayMemories platform. It doesn't run a full mobile
OS like <a href="http://www.popphoto.com/gear/2012/08/new-gear-nikon-coolpix-s800c-android-powered-wifi-equipped-compact-camera">Nikon's Android-sporting S800c</a>,
but it does support additional PlayMemories apps that let you add
functionalities to the camera. For instance, you can beam photos to an
iOS or Android device over WiFi or even directly upload photos to
Facebook. Other apps include things like additional picture effects,
bracketing options, and, in the future, time-lapse. No, there's no
mention of Instagram.</div>
<div class="p1">
The camera body has a few new additions, including a
programmable control dial and a function button. The touchscreen display
also now flips up 180-degrees to be front-facing like that on the entry-level NEX-F3
so you can take self-portraits for later Facebook attention grabbing.
Also pulled from the F3 are the Auto Portrait Framing mode, which triest
to crop your images according to photographic rules and the Clear Image
Zoom which doubles the focal length of an attached lens without
mangling image quality like typical digital zoom would.</div>
<div class="p1">
Finally, they've also added the coveted 1080p video
capture at 60 fps, which is something action video shooters are always
very happy to have. It's not surprising to see, though, since Sony was
even able to cram that into their RX100 advanced compact. </div>
<div class="p1">
The NEX-5R is scheduled to start shipping in October for
$750 bundled with the 18-55mm kit zoom lens or $650 on its own. That
will put it very much in competition with the upcoming Canon EOS-M, which has many similarities, at least on paper. Go little cameras, go.</div>

You'll get more for your money than you would with an iPad, though. <br />
Microsoft's Surface--the company's first in-house Windows 8
computer, or tablet, or whatever it is, goes up for pre-order today.
This is a gadget <a href="http://www.popsci.com/gadgets/article/2012-06/microsoft-announces-its-first-real-tablet-surface" target="_blank">you should care about!</a>
It's designed to be a do-everything device--you can use it like a
tablet, with superfast touch gestures and apps and stuff, or like a
computer, with a keyboard and a full web browser and Flash and Microsoft
Office and stuff. It's also startlingly beautiful; Microsoft is much
better at making hardware<br />
<div class="summary">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span class="img-title">Microsoft Surface Tablet</span>
<span class="pic-credit">Microsoft</span></span>

<br />
than most people realize, but this is their
crowning achievement. (Our friend Sam Biddle at Gizmodo <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5952078/inside-surface-microsofts-insane-quest-for-gadget-perfection" target="_blank">gushed over it</a>.) It looks awesome.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The base model is $500 for 32GB of storage--twice, Microsoft is eager
to say, the amount of storage as the equivalent cheapest iPad. But, you
almost certainly don't want that one, which makes it a weird item to
boast about. What you want is the next one up, which throws in the Touch
Cover for another $100. (There's also a 64GB + Touch Cover version, for
$700.<br />
The Touch Cover might be Microsoft's best weapon; it looks sort of
like the iPad's Smart Cover (a little cloth-covered metallic flap that
sticks onto the tablet with magnets) except it has a keyboard in it.
Doesn't sound like a big deal, but is. Everyone who's used it is very
impressed with it--Matt Buchanan at <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattbuchanan/microsofts-surface-tablet-costs-as-much-as-an-ipa" target="_blank">Buzzfeed FWD</a>
called it "kind of a magical little piece of technology." It senses
your fingers without the need for force feedback, meaning it can tell
when you're typing and when you're just resting your hands on the
keyboard. Typing on an iPad is adequate at best--this might be great.
It'll cost $130 extra if you opt not to buy it or want fancy colors.<br />
The Surface goes on sale October 26th, but you can <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-US" target="_blank">pre-order now</a>, if you're comfortable not waiting for our review.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Mq9-UWmA0nYDQVPVnVEk3qvig582DHp9UBolnDngOqAJ6e7TPpHnPPye0PEwXTi5ddBL1Zgj7kv4vqo4tqgU4z6-330mwikCUCHdmLQJKl3qoH_WoE4MNeBZLj8cWq0HN3ME8Q1UKiM/s1600/6a00d8341bf67c53ef017ee565c04d970d-800wi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="259" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Mq9-UWmA0nYDQVPVnVEk3qvig582DHp9UBolnDngOqAJ6e7TPpHnPPye0PEwXTi5ddBL1Zgj7kv4vqo4tqgU4z6-330mwikCUCHdmLQJKl3qoH_WoE4MNeBZLj8cWq0HN3ME8Q1UKiM/s320/6a00d8341bf67c53ef017ee565c04d970d-800wi.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
There's plenty of talk about alternative energy options out there, but this battery powered by an orange has to be one of the more interesting attempts at it. The result is pretty cool looking to boot.<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1997060459695269006" name="more"></a>
The orange battery was created by photographer Caleb Charland, who
has made a project out of using fruits and veggies — and other objects —
to create light as the subjects of his photography.<br />
The electricity powering the bulb hidden in the center of the
segments comes from the chemical reaction between the citric acid in the
orange and the zinc nails in the segment. <br />
As you might expect, the power coming from an orange and a few nails
isn't going to be enough for it to be your new light fixture. The amount
of light produced from this experiment is so low that the photo you see
here is the result of a 14-hour exposure.<br />
Even if it isn't a scientific breakthrough, it is a pretty cool
little experiment on generating energy and an otherworldly example of long exposure photographyE, with a little steampunk style thrown in.<br />

he latest TOP500 supercomputer rankings, released today, place America's 16-plus-petaflop machine at the top.<br />
The latest TOP500 ranking of the world’s fastest supercomputers is
out this morning, and America is (finally) back on top. After nearly
three years trailing supercomputers abroad--Japan’s K computer reigned
supreme for most of last year, with China’s Tianhe-1A close behind--the
U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has
stolen the top spot via Sequoia, a 16.32 petaflops (that’s a quadrillion<br />

containing 98,304 computing nodes and 1.6 million cores.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
That pushes Japan’s K computer into second place while another DOE
IBM machine, known as Mira, elbowed its way into the number three spot.
In fact, IBM had a really good day, taking the number four spot as well
with Germany’s SuperMUC. China rounded out the top five with Tianhe-1A.<br />
What is the DOE doing with all those petaflops? Mostly, it's making
sure America’s nuclear weapons stockpile is both secure and ready to
annihilate at a moment’s notice. But the ability to simulate and model
nuclear weapons tests means we don’t have to actually conduct them (and
haven't had to for 20 years), and the science that falls out of those
sims benefits the DOE in other tangential ways. The TOP500 list was
released this morning at the International Supercomputing Conference in
Hamburg, Germany.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="summary" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span class="img-title">Neurosynaptic Cores</span><span class="img-summary">
This network of neurosynaptic cores is derived from wiring in the
monkey brain. The cores are clustered into regions, also inspired by the
brain, and each core is represented by a point along the ring. Arcs
connect the different cores to each other. Each core contains 256
neurons, 1024 axons, and 256×1024 synapses.</span>
<span class="pic-credit">IBM </span></span>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Sequoia supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,
recently crowned world champion of supercomputers, just simulated 10
billion neurons and 100 trillion connections among them--the <a href="http://www.kurzweilai.net/ibm-simulates-530-billon-neurons-100-trillion-synapses-on-worlds-fastest-supercomputer" target="_blank">most powerful brain simulation ever</a>.
IBM and LLNL built an unprecedented 2.084 billion neurosynaptic cores,
which are an IBM-designed computer architecture that is designed to work
like a brain.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
IBM was careful to say it didn’t build a realistic simulated complete
brain-- “Rather, we have simulated a novel modular, scalable,
non-von-Neumann, ultra-low power, cognitive computing architecture,” IBM
researchers say in an <a href="http://www.modha.org/blog/SC12/RJ10502.pdf" target="_blank">abstract</a>
(PDF) of their new paper. It meets DARPA’s metric of 100 trillion
synapses, which is based on the number of synapses in the human brain.
This is part of DARPA’s cognitive computing program, called Systems of
Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics (SyNAPSE).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To do it, IBM used its cognitive computing chips, which the company <a href="http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-08/first-generation-cognitive-chips-based-brain-architecture-will-revolutionize-computing-ibm-says">unveiled last year</a>.
They are designed to recreate the phenomena between spiking neurons and
synapses. More than 2 billion of these cores were divided into 77
brain-inspired regions, with gray matter and white matter connectivity,
according to IBM. The gray matter networking comes from modeling, and
the white matter networking comes from a detailed map of connections in
the macaque brain. The combined total 530 billion neurons and 100
trillion synapses ran 1,542 times slower than real time--actually quite
fast, in computing terms. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ultimate goal is a computer that works like a brain, and can
analyze information in real time from multiple sources. Under SyNAPSE,
it would also be able to rewire itself dynamically in response to its
environment, just like real brains do. It would also have to be very
small and low-power, which in some ways will be even more challenging
than developing the connections. IBM presented its latest results at the
Supercomputing 2012 conference.</div>
